The #CCCDreamTeam XV

Leading international rugby brand Canterbury has created the ultimate rugby line-up using their 110,000-strong social media following to pick a XV of the very best players rugby has ever seen.

Over a 13-week period, Canterbury asked their Facebook and Twitter fans which players should make up the best ever rugby team of all time. Using the #CCCDreamTeam hash tag, the most voted-for player was given the honour in each position.

With over 5000 votes, the #CCCDreamTeam boasts undoubtedly one of the strongest teams in world rugby, with an impressive seven Rugby World Cup titles between them.

The final #CCCDreamTeam was:

  1. Jason Leonard
  2. Keith Wood
  3. Adam Jones
  4. Martin Johnson
  5. Victor Matfield
  6. Richard Hill
  7. Richie McCaw
  8. Zinzan Brooke
  9. Gareth Edwards
  10. Jonny Wilkinson
  11. Jonah Lomu
  12. Ma’a Nonu
  13. Brian O’Driscoll
  14. David Campese
  15. Christian Cullen

Over 477 players being nominated through the campaign, the most voted for players were Brian O’Driscoll and Jonah Lomu, both with 235 votes each. Talismanic centre O’Driscoll also leads the table of most international caps with 133, followed by All Black captain Richie McCaw and England stalwart Jason Leonard, each on 119.

Former Wallabies’ winger David Campese ran in the most international tries, with 64, and the #CCCDreamTeam scored a staggering combined try total of 319.

The closest battle across the weeks was for the fly-half jersey, between Jonny Wilkinson and Dan Carter, as the two could not be separated until the final votes. The Englishman eventually pulled on the #CCCDreamTeam no.10 shirt, becoming the leading point scorer for the squad with 1179 – over half of the team’s points total of 2752.

While an array of electric runners and points-scorers make up the back line, the #CCCDreamTeam is not without its bruising powerhouses. The total weight of the pack is 876kg (138 stone) with Ospreys, Wales and Lions prop Adam Jones contributing a huge 120kg alone and accompanied in the front row by Jason Leonard and former Ireland captain Keith Wood. Jones is one of five current players to be named in the squad, with ten retired players including legendary Wales scrum-half Gareth Edwards proving that the knowledge of Canterbury fans expands well past the current rugby era.
