NICK EASTER’S exceptional form for Harlequins has been recognised as the former England international No 8 was named Aviva Premiership Rugby Player of the Month for December.
The Fridge, more affectionately known as Minty because of his dodgy South London accent, has been on sterling form this season. Despite being one of the veterans of the League, at 35 years old, his workload has by no means diminished as he tops the charts for off loads and total carries.
Aviva ambassador Austin Healey credited Easter’s support play saying it “comes from a fantastic ability to read the game.”
Easter was instrumental in a great month for Harlequins as they won four of their five fixtures, including PremRugby matches against Newcastle Falcons and Exeter Chiefs, the latter being Harlequins’ annual Big Game at Twickenham in front of 75,000 people.
Easter was delighted to see Quins end the year on a high saying, “There have been a lot of good performances in the month of December – we had the Big Game at Twickenham and the win up at Newcastle as well.”
“I’m pleased with the way I’m playing. There are still a lot of things to work on, which I will continue to do.”
But his age is the key reason Stuart Lancaster continues to ignore him, as the England Head Coach looks to build a squad for the future.
“I will try my best every single game and try to put my best performances on the park – sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t,” Easter added. “If it is good enough to gain international recognition, then great.”
“I understand Lancaster’s youth policy but you never know what is round the corner – sport is a funny thing and if you keep yourself in the running, I might be able to get another chance.”
Here are Easter’s December highlights:
Easter beat Northampton Saints outside-half Stephen Myler, Saracens wing David Strettle and his Harlequins team-mate Charlie Walker to the fourth Aviva Premiership Rugby Player of the Month title of the season after they were shortlisted by a prestigious media panel.
Easter wins a trophy from title sponsor Aviva and he will donate £250 to Clic Sargent Cancer charity.
