The Hand of Back

Football had the ‘Hand of God’; rugby had the Hand of Back.

In a highly prestigious career spanning 17 years, Neil Back played in three World Cups, was an integral part of the victorious 2003 side, toured with the Lions on three occasions and won two Heineken Cups and five Premiership titles.

Stick his name into Google though and the first option it presents you with is:

Neil Back Google

Now ‘cheat’ may be a tad harsh since it stems from a select few moments in his career but Neil Back certainly knew how to bend the rules.

The second of those Heineken Cup triumphs will live on, particularly in the minds of Munster fans. Trailing by six points in the closing minutes, Munster had one last chance to score a crucial try with a scrum under the Leicester posts.  In comes a ‘stray’ hand from Back; cue a Pingu impression by Peter Stringer.

Gamesmanship or plain cheating – what do you think?
